What Is Hantavirus? — Clinical Overview
ANDES VIRUS (MV Hondius Strain) — CLINICAL OVERVIEW
Transmission
Primarily via inhaling aerosolized rodent urine, feces, or saliva. Andes virus is the only hantavirus that can also spread between people — but only through very prolonged, close contact with an infected person. General public risk is very low.
Symptoms (HPS)
Incubation: 1–8 weeks. Early: fever, fatigue, muscle aches. Late-stage: severe cough, shortness of breath, fluid in the lungs (ARDS). Case fatality rate for Andes virus is 25–40%. Early ICU care with ECMO support significantly improves survival chances.
Treatment & Prevention
No specific antiviral or vaccine exists globally. Treatment is supportive: ICU, oxygen, and ECMO in severe cases. Prevention: avoid rodent contact, use N95 masks when cleaning rodent areas, wet-clean (never dry-sweep), seal entry holes in homes.
